To me, the sole purpose of art is such communication — not to be decorative or pretty or compliment a room’s colors or to fit nicely over the sofa. All that really matters is the communication; and the stronger and more profound, the greater the art.

In the end, I don’t care whether someone loves my work or hates it. It is all the same to me. I have succeeded. But I am terribly upset by indifference because it means I have failed to prod and inflame and communicate.
